서찰을 통해 본 18세기 사족 네트워크의 형성과 확장 - 영남 사족 이상정과 최흥원의 사례를 중심으로 - = The Formation and Expansion of Sajok Networks in the 18th Century through Correspondence: A Case Study of Yi Sang-jeong and Choe Heung-won in Yeongnam

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 18세기 영남 지역을 대표하는 유학자 이상정과 최흥원이 주고받은 서찰을 중심으로 사족 네트워크의 형성과 확장 양상을 분석한 것이다. 여기에서는 이상정의 『대산집』과 최흥원의 『백불암집』에 수록된 상호 서찰을 주요 자료로 삼고 이상정과 최흥원의 문인록을 추가로 분석하여, 문자 수수, 자제 교육, 문인 교유라는 세 가지 측면에서 관계의 형성과 확장 과정을 검토하였다.
먼저 문자 수수의 측면에서는 기문과 묘갈명 등의 작성과 첨삭 과정이 단순한 문장 의뢰를 넘어서 관련 자료 제공 및 문장에 대한 수정과 비평 등을 포함하는 공동적인 학문 활동이었음을 확인하였다. 다음으로 자제 교육을 통해 두 사람의 관계가 아들･조카･손자 세대로 확장되었으며, 이는 개인 간 교유가 가문 단위의 학문 네트워크로 전환되는 과정이라는 것을 밝혔다. 또한 공통 문인을 매개로 한 교유를 통해 두 사람의 네트워크가 영남 지역 전반으로 확산되었음을 확인하였다.
결과적으로 이상정과 최흥원의 교유는 단순한 개인적 관계를 넘어, 문자 생산과 학문의 전승, 교육과 학문에 대한 공통적 인식을 매개로 유지･확장된 복합적 네트워크였다. 이는 18세기 영남 사족 사회에서 학문 공동체가 형성되고 지속되는 방식을 보여주는 중요한 사례라 할 수 있다.

This study examines the formation and expansion of Sajok Networks in the 18th-century Yeongnam region through the correspondence between Yi Sang- jeong and Choe Heung-won.
Using the letters in “Daesan jip” and “Baekbulam jip”, along with their registers of disciples, this study analyzes three aspects of their relationship: textual exchange, education of descendants, and interactions with fellow literati. The exchange of texts, including commemorative writings and epitaphs, involved not only requests for composition but also collaborative processes of revision and evaluation. In addition, their relationship expanded across generations through the education of sons, nephews, and grandsons, transforming personal ties into family-based scholarly networks. Furthermore, shared disciples facilitated the extension of their network across the Yeongnam region.
Ultimately, their relationship developed into a multilayered network sustained through textual production, scholarly transmission, and educational practices. This case demonstrates an important aspect of how scholarly communities among the Sajok were formed and maintained in 18th-century Yeongnam.
