‘한류’ 시대 북미의 한국학 －2020년대 북미 한국학 교육 및 연구의 현황과 미래에 관한 고찰－ = Korean Studies in North America During the “Hallyu” Era ―Observations on the Present and Future of Korean Studies in North America in the 2020s―

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 한국 대중문화에 대한 세계적 관심이 증가한 이른바 현 시점, ‘한류’ 시대 북미의 한국학 연구 및 교육의 현황을 조망한다. 이 글은 특히 현재 한국학 강의를 수강 중인 학생들의 관심사를 조사하면서, 한국 현대문학 연구의 전반적인 동향 및 전망을 살펴보고자 한다. 제2장에서는 2025년 가을 콜로라도 대학교 볼더 캠퍼스의 한국학 수강생들을 대상으로 실시한 설문조사 결과를 제시한다. 먼저 수강생의 인구통계학적 특성을 분석하고, 인구통계학적 특성이 학생들의 한국에 대한 사전 지식 및 한국학 강의 수강 동기에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 살펴본다. 이어서 학생들이 가장 흥미를 느꼈던 주제에 관한 설문 응답을 검토한다. 북미의 한국학 연구 및 교육의 의제를 한류 시대의 흐름에 더욱 밀접하게 맞추어야 한다는 일반적인 가정과는 달리, 설문 결과에 따르면 학생들은 한국사에 높은 관심을 가지고 있으며, 특히 한국의 고대사와 건국 신화에 대한 각별한 열의를 보여주었다. 이와 같은 의외의 결과를 바탕으로, 북미의 한국학 학자들이 고려해야 할 질문을 살펴본다. 제3장에서는 최근 출간된 한국학 논문집 두 권을 비교 검토하면서, 북미의 한국 현대문학 연구의 현황을 살펴본다. 현재 북미의 한국 현대문학 연구는 미국의 지역적 맥락과 연동하여 초국가주의, 디아스포라, 젠더와 같은 주제의 영향력이 여전히 강화되는 한편, 퀴어 문학 및 매체 중심 문학 분석으로 확장되고 있다. 제3장에서는 급성장 중인 분야인 ‘한류 연구’에 주목하여, 북미 한국학 연구가 역사적 관점에서 대중문화에 대한 비판적 연구를 생산할 수 있는 잠재력을 가지고 있다는 점을 조망하고, 그 과정에서 직면한 주요 장애물 및 한계를 논한다. 이 글은 북미 내 동아시아학 내부에서 지속되고 있는 ‘소프트 파워 전쟁’에서 한류가 갖는 의미를 간략히 언급하고, 본 논문의 연구 결과를 바탕으로 한국학의 향후 발전 방향에 대한 제언을 제시하며 마무리한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This essay surveys the present field of Korean studies in North America during the “Hallyu” era, or the present time, defined by a growing global awareness and interest in Korean popular culture. Special focus is placed on deciphering the interests of students currently enrolled in Korean studies courses, overall trends in recent modern and contemporary Korean literary studies, and the future of the field.
The second part of the essay presents the results of a survey conducted in the fall of 2025 of students enrolled in Korean studies courses at the University of Colorado Boulder. It breaks down student enrollment demographics and how they impact previous knowledge of Korea and overall motivations for enrolling in Korean studies courses. I then present and provide commentary on survey responses regarding what topics students enjoyed studying most. Counter to the common assumption that Korean studies in North America must align its research and education agendas more closely with the Hallyu era, survey results demonstrate greater student interest in Korean history, with a particular enthusiasm voiced for ancient history and founding myths. I conclude the first part of the essay by asking, how should Korean studies scholars in North America respond to these surprising findings? The third part of the essay overviews the present state of modern Korean literary studies in North America through a comparative case study of two recently published essay anthologies. The analysis addresses how the regional context of the United States encourages the dominance of topics such as transnationalism, diaspora, and gender while also addressing the significance of emergent Korean literary studies into queer literature and media-centered literary analysis.
The fourth part of the essay shifts from modern Korean literary studies to the growing field of “Hallyu studies,” addressing both its potential for producing historically grounded and critical studies of Korean popular culture as well as the major obstacles and limitations it faces. Finally, I conclude with brief comments on the significance of Hallyu to the soft power war that continues to unfold within East Asian studies in North America and offer suggestions for the future direction of Korean studies based on the research findings presented in this essay.
