은유 분석을 활용한 대학생의 교양 인식 연구 - 교양교육 장(field)에 ‘일루지오(illusio)’는 존재하는가? - = A Study on University Students’ Perceptions of Liberal Arts Using Metaphor Analysis : Does Illusio Exist in the Field of Liberal Arts Education?

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 경기도 소재 K대학 학생들이 ‘교양’을 어떻게 인식하고 있는지를 탐색함으로써, 교양교육 장이 작동하는 인지적·감각적 조건을 문화사회학적으로 해석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 부르디외의 장(field) 개념과 일루지오(illusio) 개념을 이론적 자원으로 활용하고, 은유 분석(metaphor analysis)을 연구 방법으로 하여 대학생 290명의 응답에 대한 질적 분석을 수행하였다. 분석 결과, 학생들은 교양을 주로 ‘성장’, ‘확장’, ‘축적’의 인지적 차원, ‘보완’과 ‘쉼’의 정서적 차원, ‘관계 맺음’의 사회적 차원, 그리고 ‘자율 선택’의 실천적 차원에서 은유화하였고, 온건한 톤의 수사를 통해 교양을 긍정하는 모습을 보였다. 그러나 동시에 교양은 ‘교양 수업’과 동의어로 받아들여지며 상대적으로 협소한 의미로 정의되고, 내기물로서 충분히 가시화되지 않으며, ‘있으면 좋지만 없어도 그만인’ 부차적인 것으로 전제되고 있었다. 이 연구는 교양에 대한 학생들의 인식이 교양의 중요성에 대한 수사적 동의와 실천적 비몰입 사이의 비대칭적 구조를 형성하고 있으며, 결과적으로 교양교육 장이 실천적 몰입이나 상징적 투쟁이 약화된 상태에서 정서적 동의에 머무는 공간으로 작동하고 있음을 ‘감성화된 일루지오’라는 새로운 개념으로 설명한다. 이를 통해 이 연구는 대학의 교양교육을 제도 문제가 아닌 제도적 존속과 상징적 작동 사이의 간극이 드러나는 하나의 사례로 분석함으로써, 교육을 둘러싼 의미 구성과 실천적 몰입의 조건을 사회학적으로 논의하는 데 기여하고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study offers a cultural-sociological interpretation of the cognitive and affective conditions under which the field of liberal arts education operates by examining how students at K University in Gyeonggi Province perceive liberal arts. Drawing on Bourdieu’s concepts of field and illusio, the study employs metaphor analysis to qualitatively analyze responses from 290 students. The findings show that students conceptualize liberal arts through metaphors related to cognitive dimensions such as “growth,” “expansion,” and “accumulation”; emotional dimensions such as “supplementation” and “rest”; social dimensions such as “forming relationships”; and the practical dimension of “autonomous choice.” These metaphors reflect a generally affirmative rhetorical stance toward liberal arts. At the same time, however, liberal arts are often narrowly understood as synonymous with liberal arts courses and are not sufficiently visualized as stakes warranting sustained investment. Instead, they are presupposed as something “nice to have but not essential.”This study argues that students’ perceptions of liberal arts are characterized by an asymmetrical structure between rhetorical endorsement and practical non-engagement. It conceptualizes this condition as “emotionalized illusio,” suggesting that the field of liberal arts education functions as a space in which emotional consent prevails while practical commitment and symbolic struggle remain weakened. By analyzing these structural contradictions at the level of student perceptions, this study contributes to sociological discussions on how meaning construction and conditions of engagement are organized within educational fields.
