Madam Jang(1598~1680), the only daughter of Jang Heung Hyo(張興孝), was the mother of Lee Hyun Yil(李玄逸) and Lee Whi Yil(李徽逸), Her literary works which is left at present consists of seven poems and one short letter. Though the number of her works is not many, her literary works occupy very special status in the history of literary women. Because her poems are based on the metaphysics of mind(心學), and this case is very rare in the history of literary women. The ultimate goals of the metaphysics of mind(心學) which was another important phase in the history of neo-confucianism(性理學) were the establishment of moral subjectivity and the accomplishment of the harmony between subject and world. Madam Jang had been taught the metaphysics of mind by her father m her childhood, and she had observed her father's discipline of the metaphysics of mind. Under the influence of father she composed four poems in her teens, that is, 「reciting about ancient saints(聖人吟)」·「reciting about cautious behavior(敬身吟)」·「reciting about sobbing sound of rain(蕭蕭吟)·「reciting about white head(鶴髮吟)」. The theme of 「reciting about ancient saints(聖人吟)」·「reciting about cautious behavior(敬身吟)」 is the expression of the vision relating to the moral subjectivity, and that of 「reciting about sobbing sound of rain(蕭蕭吟)」·「reciting about white head(鶴 髮吟)」 is the expression of the vision relating to the harmonious relation between subject and world. Especially in the 「reciting about sobbing sound of rain(蕭蕭吟)」 she expressed the vision of the harmonious relation between subject and world, and in the 「 reciting about white head(鶴髮吟)」, by grieving the disruption of the harmony between subject and world, she manifested the hope for the restoration of the harmony. Most of another works written in the later part of her life are similar to these in theme. Madam Jang hadn't learned special techniques fur creating poem throughout her life. She concentrated her efforts on expressing theme of her poems using the knowledge of poetry acquired on the common level. So, her poems have very thematic character.
