광복이전 Rugby-football의 정체성 탐색 = The purpose of the historical meaning of Rugby-football before national liberation

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Rugby-football, a sport which has a strong physical jostle like a hand-to-hand fight, appeared in the period of Japanese ruling, grew at that time, and developed. Many people wonder how Rugby-football developed under the Japanese ruling. But so far, there is few historical researches on this question. Therefore, as a plan for a lack of research and indifference on Rugby-football in Korea, this thesis is to arrange and summarize the appearance and development of Korean Rugby-football, focused on the pre-National Liberation. And also, this thesis aims to discuss on the anti-Japanese spirit and the meaning of sport nationalism of Rugby-football which enabled Koreans to enjoy the delight of victory by a strong physical jostle against Japanese. The results are as follows. In the first place, the appearance and the development of Rugby-football are divided into four periods; the appearance period(in 1920s), the development period(1927~1936), the oppressed period(1937~1939), the dormancy period(1940~1944). In the second place, the victory of Korean team under the Japanese ruling gave a proxy satisfaction to our Koreans, and furthermore, it led to a anti-Japanese struggle, confidence, and a firm solidarity of Koreans. Especially, the victory at Rugby-football match just like a hand-to-hand fight has a significant meaning. The victory means a direct and undeniable one. It can be said that we Koreans, through the spirit of Rugby-football, that is, an self-regulation and submissiveness(internal value), and a strong manliness(external value), have had a sustained determination and perseverance for a sport nationalism.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 광복이전 Rugby-football의 역사적 발전과정을 통해 그 시대정신이 한국 Rugby-football의 정체성을 함양하는데 어떤 영향을 미쳤으며, 그 정체성에는 어떠한 요소들이 거론될 수 있는가를 연구한 것이다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 과거에서 현재까지의 다양한 Rugby-football관련 자료들을 통해 광복 이전의 사회적 분위기와 Rugby-football과의 연관성을 도출하였고, 이를 통해 그 정체성을 탐색하였다. 그 결과 광복 이전의 Rugby-football은 그 자체로서 강렬함, 강인함, 남성다움, 투쟁심과 같은 특성들이 민족 공동체를 주체로 하는 개념인 민족정신과 결부되기에 수월했고, 또한 근대유럽의 강건한 기독교주의나 트루넨 운동과 같이 강한 민족을 구성하는 요소로 주목될 수 있었음을 밝혔다. 이는 스포츠가 가지고 있는 시대정신과 역사적 의의를 도출하려는 역사철학적 연구로 궁극적으로 바람직한 스포츠 문화 창달에 그 의의가 있는 것이다.
