텍스트마이닝을 통한 김정은 시기 경제정책 연구 - 토픽 모델링 분석을 중심으로 - = A Study on Economic Policy of the Kim Jong-un Period through Text Mining : Focusing on topic modeling analysis

The purpose of this article is to study the North Korean economic policy of the Kim Jong-un period through text mining analysis in the current situation in North Korea. Compared to its predecessors, the Kim Jong-un regime has undergone many changes in a short period of time. In such a situation where it is difficult to predict Kim Jong-un’s intentions, the economic intentions of the North Korean regime during the Kim Jong-un period can be obtained economically through text mining analysis of the periodical publication 『Economic Research』 of North Korea.
As a result of topic modeling analysis, ‘Kim Jong-il’ and ‘Kim Il-sung’ appeared in 2012, 2014, and 2015. It can be judged that it was intended to reinforce the legitimacy of the inheritance as a successor by frequently using the name of the predecessor and emphasizing the continuity of the regime in the context of the three generations of succession. The second topic appears in 2016 and 2017, and keywords related to socialist enterprises such as ‘enterprise’, ‘corporation’, ‘economic’, ‘reasonable’, and ‘competitiveness’ stand out. The third topic is 2018 and 2019. Following the second topic, keywords such as ‘development zone’ and ‘activation’ and ‘scientific’ and ‘scientification’ appear in addition to the keywords related to business establishments.
In this study, data were analyzed until the end of 2019, which is currently available in Korea. In the future, the longer the term of Kim Jong-un’s power, the more prominent the tendency of quarterly and yearly changes will be. In addition, in this study, analysis was conducted on the entire thesis published in 『Economic Research』. We expect to be able to read detailed changes in the policy direction of Korea, and this remains for future research.
