바슐라르의 공기이미지를 활용한 음악콘텐츠 분석 : 메탈 밴드 드림 씨어터(Dream Theater)의 <<A Change of Seasons>>를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 음악의 반복적인 청취가 인간의 심상에 어떤 이미지를 남기는가 에 대한 질문에서 출발한다. 인간에게 있어 음악의 중요성은 음악이 없는 것을 상상하는 것으로 대신할 수 있다. 현대사회에서 음악은 일종의 문화상품으로 취급되고 있다. 상품은 생산과 소비의 두 가지 차원으로 이루어지며 음악의 상품화로 인해 좋은 음악들이 점점 잊히고 있다.
좋은 음악을 분석하는 것으로 바슐라르의 상상력 이론을 사용하였다. 바슐라르의 상상력 이론을 도입한 계기는 무한한 영역에서 새로운 것을 건져내는 작업이 예술이라는 전제를 기반하고 있다. 새로운 것을 창조하는 것은 곧 상상력과 연결된다. 상상력 연구의 코페르니쿠스적인 혁명을 일으킨 바슐라르의 이론을 통해 음악을 분석하였다.
바슐라르는 우주가 4가지 원소로 이루어져 있다는 서양의 사상을 기반으로 4원소론을 주장했다. 본 연구에서는 바슐라르의 시학 연구 방법론을 음악의 연구에서도 사용할 수 있다는 것에 착안했다. 물, 불, 공기, 대지의 원소 중 본 연구에서는‘공기의 이미지’를 중심으로 분석하였다. 그리고 공기의 하위 이미지 중‘바람’이라는 이미지를 선정하고 바람의 속성에서 다시 4가지 원소들과 연결되는 속성을 구분하였다.
연구대상이 되는 음악은 메탈 밴드 드림 씨어터의 음악을 선정했다. 프로그레시브 메탈은 대중음악과는 다른 특성들이 많고 실험적인 도전들로 인해 일반인들이 쉽게 접하지 않는다. 음악을 분석하면서 바슐라르가 말한 4원소들의 특성을 발견할 수 있었다.
연구의 결론은 바슐라르의 시학 연구와 음악 연구를 제외한 다른 예술들의 분석이 가능하다는 것이다. 예술창작의 영역에서 4원소론은 새로운 도구가 될 것이며 예술감상의 영역에서 4원소론은 새로운 감각으로 작용할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The study begins with the question of what image repeated listening to music leaves in the human mind. The importance of music to humans can be replaced by imagining that there is no music. In modern society, music is treated as a kind of cultural product. Goods consist of two dimensions of production and consumption, and good music is gradually forgotten by the commercialization of music.
Bachelard's theory of imagination was used to analyze good music. The motivation for introducing Bachelard's theory of imagination is based on the premise that the work of rescuing new things from infinite areas is art. Creating new things is soon linked to imagination. Music was analyzed through Bachelard's theory that led to the Copernican revolution in imagination research.
Based on the Western idea that the universe is made up of four elements, Bachelard argued for the theory of four elements. In this study, it was based on the idea that Bachelard's poetic research methodology can also be used in the study of music. Among the elements of water, fire, air, and earth, this study focused on" images of air". We then selected the" wind" image among the sub-images of the air and separated the properties of the wind from the properties of the wind that are connected to the four elements again.
The music to be studied was selected by the metal band Dream Theater. Progressive metal has many different characteristics than popular music and is not easily accessible to the general public due to experimental challenges. Analyzing the music, I was able to discover the characteristics of the four elements that Bachelard talked about.
The conclusion of the study is that it is possible to analyze other arts except for the study of poetry and music in Bachelard. In the realm of art creation, the four elements will be a new tool, and in the realm of art appreciation, the four elements will act as a new sense.
