미국 아트퀼트의 확립 과정 연구 = The Establishment and of American Art Quilts

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 미국에서 퀼트가 아트퀼트로 수용되며 그 위상을 확립해가는 과정을 추적한다. 신대륙인 미국이 유럽인들에 의해 개척되면서 함께 유입된 퀼트는 여성들의 일상 속에서 실용성과 예술성을 동시에 추구하는 주요 매체로 발전해왔다. 산업혁명 이전에는 상류층 여성의 미의식과 창의성을 표현한 고급 예술 활동이었다. 그러나 산업혁명을 거치며 재료와 기법이 급격히 확산되고 대중화되면서 19세기 말 경에는 근검절약과 개척 정신이라는 미국적 정체성을 상징하는 대표적인 공예 매체로 부상하게 된다. 이후 20세기를 거치며 단순한 공예품이 아닌 예술 작품 즉 ‘(순수)미술’로서의 위상과 가치를 높이려는 움직임이 점차 커져 가게 된다. 특히 1960년대 소위 1세대 페미니즘 미술가들은 퀼트를 중요한 ‘여성적’ 표현 매체로 규정하며 작품에 적극 활용하기 시작했고, 1971년에 개최된 《미국 퀼트의 추상적 디자인전》은 전통 퀼트에서 모더니즘적 추상미술의 요소를 발견하고 부각시킴으로써 순수미술 작품으로 퀼트를 전시하는 출발점이 되었다. 1980년대에는 퀼트의 대대적인 문서화 작업이 진행되어 전통 퀼트 유물들을 발굴, 데이터화하였고, 전문 박물관과 연구소의 설립 등이 잇따랐다. 또한 여러 전문 협회가 설립되었고, 이러한 단체들을 중심으로 다양한 활동과 순수 미술적 측면이 강조된 퀼트 교육이 펼쳐지면서 현대적인 퀼트의 창작과 전시가 활성화된다. 즉 전시, 소장, 연구, 교육, 제도화 등의 활동이 복합적으로 함께 진행되면서, 마침내 1986년에는 《아트퀼트》라는 제목의 선언적인 전시가 열렸고 ‘미술로서의 퀼트’ 즉 아트퀼트가 정립되는 단계에 이른다. 이처럼 퀼트는 미국의 역사와 함께 많은 여성들의 삶 속에서 발현되어 온 중요한 문화예술 매체이자 활동이다. 특히 20세기 후반에는 예술계의 변화와 수용과정을 거치면서 단순히 공예품이 아닌 아트퀼트로서의 위상을 확립하기에 이르렀고, 이것은 세계 여러 국가의 아트퀼트 실천과 확산에도 큰 영향을 끼치며 발전해오고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper traces the historical process through which quilts in the United States came to be recognized as “art quilts” and attained the status of legitimate art. Introduced to the New World by European settlers, quilts developed into a medium that simultaneously embodied utility and aesthetic expression in the daily lives of women. Prior to the Industrial Revolution, quilts was regarded as a refined artistic activity that reflected the aesthetic sensibilities and creativity of upper-class women. However, with the mass dissemination of materials and techniques during the Industrial Era, the quilts became increasingly popularized. By the late 19th century, it had come to symbolize values such as thrift and pioneering spirit, establishing itself as an iconic expression of American cultural identity. In the 20th century, efforts to elevate quilts from craft to fine art gained momentum, gradually enhancing their cultural and artistic value. During the 1960s, first-generation feminist artists identified quilts as a potent medium of “feminine” expression and began actively incorporating it into their work. A critical turning point came with the 1971 exhibition Abstract Design in American Quilts, which revealed elements of modernist abstraction in traditional quilts, thereby positioning quilts within the realm of fine art. By the 1980s, large-scale documentation and digitization projects were launched to preserve the quilt heritage, alongside the establishment of museums and research institutes dedicated exclusively to the quilts. Professional organizations were also formed to promote quilt education from an artistic perspective, encouraging both creative production and exhibition activities. These developments culminated in the landmark 1986 exhibition The Art Quilt, which definitively solidified the status of quilts as a recognized art form. As such, quilts has functioned as a significant cultural and artistic medium deeply rooted in the lives of American women. Especially in the latter half of the 20th century, the recognition and institutionalization of quilts as art contributed to the global dissemination and development of the art quilt movement, playing a pivotal role in the ongoing evolution and expansion of quilting as a contemporary art practice.
