Signs, the necessary means of message delivery and communication, have been settled down as a design language needed for idea conception and its development in the visual communication discipline. With signs applied to book-cover designs, this study searches for the new possibilities of book-cover designs through Peter Mendelsund’s expressive techniques with which he has built on creative design artwork. We will consider them through three components of signs-icons, indexes, and symbols, using the analytic tool of Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotics. According to how Mendelsund takes advantage of signs in book covers, they will be classified into and looked at “the visualization of icon signs”, “the visualization of index signs”, and “the visualization of symbol signs”.
In the visualization of icon signs, we try to induce readers’ direct responses and interpretations so that they can get to the messages just looking at book covers via primary icon signs immediately revealing the theme of the book.
In the visualization of index signs, we will also prompt readers to interpret meta-message within the signs via secondary index signs which refer to something else associated with a book theme. With index signs causing associations, it occurs through message interactions between a book designer and readers, or a between a book and readers.
Lastly, in the visualization of symbol signs, readers are required of creative reading comprehension through tertiary symbol signs which can be established by social compact or arbitrary meanings with a lack of casuality of its theme. Symbol signs draw readers’ attention and arouse their curiosity, and they may be such a visual representation tool that helps book designers to interpret creatively and expand expressions.
Signs make it possible to hold the vast narrative of a entire book inside a book cover of small framework. The most remarkable in Mendelsund’s book covers is the creative conversion of themes mediated by signs. Looking at Mendelsund’s book covers from a semiotic point of view, they are being used in a way of revealing a theme or a message as it is (primary icon signs), borrowing another message associated with (secondary index signs), or suggesting new visual conception (tertiary symbol signs). The promising book-cover designers could learn theme conversions, idea conceptions, and expression methods with the use of these signs.
Beyond visual expressions, this study shows that the value of book-cover designs with aesthetic expressions using signs can be enhanced. The purpose of the study is to help book-cover designers to communicate with readers more deeply by understanding better and using positively sign system and present the grounds for possibilities of more creative vidual design arts as well.
