The purpose of this study is to provide a detailed account of the point of view used as a technical device in The Ambassadors composed of Strether's point-of-view and called his masterpiece.
The Ambassadors is one of the novels [Roderick Hudson. What Maisie Knew. The American] composed of one $quot;central intelligence's$quot; point-of-view. But here Roderick Hudson [$quot;central intelligence$quot; and $quot;center of interest$quot; are separated] and The American [an active hero becomes $quot;central intelligence$quot; and $quot;center of interest$quot;] are briefly discussed to show how the technical devices are different from the early novels and the point-of-view technics are developed from.
For the study of The Ambassadors, following items are examined: the relationship of the narrator(author-narrator) to the action of the story -- participant or observer and then involved or detachea; the relationship of the narrator to the reflectors of the stroy(attitude of the narrator to the reflectors) -- close and intimate or formal and detached; narrator's and reflectors' knowledge about the characters -whether they know what the characters think and what will happen in the future; how does the narrator combine scene, summary, and description; reflectors' qualities and characteristics.
In conclusion, James quietly patters back and forth between authorial omniscience and Strether's point-of-view. But both internal and external evidences show that he intends us to read The Ambassadors in its entirety as Strether's experience, registered by him, and relayed by him. By depending upon the restricted Strether's point-of-view, the illusion of reality is as complete and successful as that achived by writing from the limited point-of-view of the familiar objectified protagonist of our time, though neither the effect nor the method is the same.
