      This study was attempted to clarify the characteristics of the central retail a shooping street in busan city through an investigation of land use and characteristics of the amusement district.
      The resuts are as follows:
      (1) From the standpoint of intensity of buildings and shops, land use is highty intensified as the central place of the metropolitan are, but the skyline is not fully developed, nor are the C.B.D. functions as extensive as would be expected in an urban area of 3 million inhabitarts.
      (2) Kwangbok street is the central retail shopping street based on three functions:
      a) shopping good, b)recreational facilities and c) general business functions.
      (3) Due especially to the concentration of retail goods shops there, the Kwang bok street area became the principal shopping and amusement district in Busan. Among the godds, personal ornaments such as dresses, watches, cameras, jewerly and glasses are predominent, and these functions have the greatest amount of locational competition.
      (4) Nampo street, the area adjacent to Kwangbok street, specializes in recreational functions. As a result, Nampo street plays the role of the amusement district(so called "the third space").
      (5) The characteristics of the central place in Busan city are also reflected by the brightness of the streets at night and pedestrians behavior.
      (6) After combining the functions of the two streets, the study area became truly a central retail shopping district.
      As noted above, Kwangbok and Nampo streets clearly comprise the central retail shopping ditricst which holds the interest of the inhabitants of Busan by its modern.
      The formation and development of this central place have been due to the accesseibility of the seaport. But since the 1960s, they experience a rapid urban sprawl and this study area lost its spatially central location and parts ahve become as poverty-stricken as the hard core of every large metropolis.
      Although it amy actually be far from centrally located, it remains unique in drawing customers from all parts of the city
