Bulletproof helmets are critical military equipment that directly impact soldier survivability and the overall effectiveness of the ROK military. Bulletproof helmets supplied to the ROK military are categorized into two types, both developed based on US military helmets. Most ballistic testing of ROK military helmets is broadly conducted in accordance with US testing methods. This process has resulted in the development of test specifications that do not consider several factors, such as Korean test site conditions and basic research data from the US test development process. This has led to a lack of detailed testing procedures, resulting in various difficulties during testing. A prime example is the P-BFS test for bulletproof helmets, which utilizes equipment, such as 3D laser scanners, and test materials, such as backing materials. As the only test site in Korea equipped with a 3D laser scanner, the Defense Agency for Technology and Quality has identified challenges in P-BFS tests for bulletproof helmets based on testing experience and research findings, and proposed solutions to address these challenges. It is hoped that this study will contribute to the smooth quality assurance and performance enhancement of the bulletproof helmets in the ROK Armed Forces.
