억압과 통제의 대상으로서의 여성의 마법의 힘: 『아서왕의 죽음』의 모르건 르 페이를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 토마스 맬러리의 (Thomas Malory)의 아서왕의 죽음(Morte d’Arthur)에 그려진 아서 왕국 내 남성 중심 연대와 여성이 지닌 마법의 힘 사이의 역학 관계를 분석하는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 모르건 르 페이는 아서 왕국에서 가장 사악한 마녀로 그려지고 있다, 그녀의 능동적이고 전복적인 마법의 힘은 남성 중심 연대가 기반으로 하는 기사도에 위협이 된다, 이에 아서왕과 그의 기사들은 모르건을 비난하고 그녀를 사탄이라 부르기까지 하면서 그녀가 지닌 힘을 지속적으로 억압하고 통제하려 한다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 다른 여자 마법사들과 달리, 모르건은 왕국 내 남성 연대에 의해 결코 쉽게 통제되지 않고 있다. 본 연구는 이 연유와 관련하여 그녀가 가부장제 사회가 요구하는 기존의 전통적인 젠더 역할을 벗어나 자신의 욕망을 추구하고 있음을 지적한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims to analyze the relation between the male-centered bond in the Arthurian kingdom and the woman’s magic power represented in Malory’s Morte d’Arthur. Morgan le Fay is portrayed as the most vicious witch in the Arthurian society. Her active and subversive magic power becomes a threat to the chivalry which is built on the male-centered bond. King Arthur and his knights try to oppress and control her power continuously blaming her and even calling her a satan. Nonetheless, unlike other sorceresses, Morgan is never oppressed or controled by the male-dominated society in the Arthurian kingdom. This study attempts to argue that Morgan is never entirely controlled by the male-dominated society because she does not easily fit into the gender role demanded in the patriarchal society but appropriates it to gratify her own desire.
