This study aims to examine the emergence and development of burial practices of groups belonging to the Slender Bronze Dagger Culture in the northern region of the Mangyeong River by subdividing the area into several micro-regions. Previous studies have generally approached the Slender Bronze Dagger Culture (or the Attached-rim Pottery Culture) across the Korean peninsula, focusing mainly on specific artifact types such as slender bronze daggers or attached-rim pottery.
As a result, chronological frameworks have not been fully unified among researchers, and regional characteristics and cultural transformations have not been examined in sufficient detail. This study argues that a more refined chronology and regional analysis are necessary for the northern region of the Mangyeong River, where the Bronze Age culture of the Honam region(Jeolla-do) was introduced and developed into the Early Iron Age.
The northern region of the Mangyeong River occupies a notable geographical position between the lower Geum River region, where the Slender Bronze Dagger Culture was introduced, and the southern Mangyeong River region, where societies were strengthened by the influx of iron culture. Differences in gave goods and the scale of burial clusters suggest social differentiation among groups, and it is assumed that micro-regional territories were formed around central burial clusters. Furthermore, the timing and processes of integration or amalgamation with the Songguk-ri Culture, which formed the Bronze Age substratum in each micro-region, likely differed by micro-region.
This study defines four micro-regional zones—Western coastal region, Giyangcheon River, Seoktapcheon River, and Iricheon River—based on central burial clusters, and establishes a five-phase chronological framework for the Slender Bronze Dagger Culture in the northern bank region by referring to previous typological studies of burial assemblages. Phase I corresponds to the initial introduction of the Slender Bronze Dagger Culture into the Honam region, dated to the early to late 3rd century BCE. Phase II is characterized by the emergence of low-density burial clusters and the appearance of standardized artifact forms, including slender bronze daggers, clay-band pottery, and black long-necked jars, dated to the mid-to-late 3rd century BCE.
Phases III and IV represent the formation of full-scale bueial clusters and are distinguished by the introduction of iron artifacts and jars with combined horn-shaped handles. In Phase V, bueial clusters become more densely concentrated, while the quantity of grave goods decreases and iron artifacts increase. This phase marks the rapid decline of the Slender Bronze Dagger Culture in the region, with only a few isolated jar burials remaining, suggesting that the culture disappeared no later than the early to mid-1st century BCE.
The emergence and development of burial practices differed by micro-region, and no clear archaeological evidence linking the area to King Jun of Gojoseon has been identified. The northern region of the Mangyeong River, originally grounded in the Songguk-ri Culture, shows complex cultural dynamics influenced by the clay-band pottery tradition of the Geum River–Asan Bay(area of Chungcheong-do) region and the Early Iron Age culture of the Mangyeong River basin. Therefore, this region provides critical archaeological evidence for understanding the development and regional diversity of the Slender Bronze Dagger Culture, and continued discoveries are expected to further clarify its cultural trajectory.
