This study investigates the behavior of Korean elementary, middle, and college students in ultimatum bargaining, and discusses a ‘put yourself in someone else’s shoes’ hypothesis. Experimental results show that average offers were 39~43 percent of the total stake and that previous role experience was insignificant in explaining the choices in round 2. Although differences in the size ultimatum offers by three age groups were absent, the rejection rate of middle school students was two times higher than that of elementary or college students. Not only those proposers who offered less than what responders anticipated, but responders whose minimum acceptable offer was the smallest amount, 100 Korean won, were found more frequently in elementary students than in middle or college students, implying that elementary students behaved closely to Nash equilibrium. The result that most college proposers reduced offers significantly in a dictator game suggests that generous offers in the ultimatum game were mainly strategic choice to increase expected payoffs by avoiding rejection, rather than dividing the pie fairly. Finally, those proposers who offered generously and those responders who rejected small offers were relatively scarce in elementary students, suggesting that strategic behavior and punishment are obtained and reinforced by learning.
