The first and second grades of elementary school are crucial for developing children’s creativity and visual perception. This study explored in-service teachers’ perceptions, experiences, and perceived limitations of art education within the “Pleasant Life” curriculum. In-depth interviews with three experienced lower-grade teachers revealed difficulties in applying the abstract curriculum and reliance on supplementary materials. Despite students’ preference for “Pleasant Life,” excessive emphasis on play led to superficial integration and reduced art content under the 2022 revised curriculum. Art was often treated as a supplementary tool, with limited materials and standardized activities, weakening continuity in grades 3–6. Teachers faced a dilemma between valuing art’s intrinsic role and adopting an instrumental approach under structural constraints. The study suggests building a systematic, stepwise framework for art education, expanding materials and media use, and providing clear, practical teaching guides to restore art’s identity and enhance creativity and visual expression.
