Re Jane (2015) is Patricia Park's debut novel and an adult coming-of-age story that reinterprets Charlotte Brontë's 1847 work, Jane Eyre, from a diasporic perspective in a witty and sophisticated manner. Set in the early 2000s, the novel follows the story of Jane Re, a recent college graduate girl, born to an American father and a Korean mother. After her mother's death, Jane has been living with her Uncle Sang's family in Flushing, New York. However, she begins to feel stifled by her life in Flushing, where she cannot fully spread her wings. Also, she feels frustrated by her racial identity―being neither fully Korean nor fully American―in a white-centered society. One day, her friend Eunice Oh suggests an opportunity, Jane moves to a household in Brooklyn, and through her journey between Korea and the United States, she strives to find her true identity.
Patricia Park was born and raised in Flushing, Queens, a Korean-American enclave in eastern Manhattan, New York City. She received her B.A. in English Literature from Swarthmore College and her M.F.A. in Fiction from Boston University. Re Jane received critical acclaim from various media outlets and was recognized as a New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice and an American Library Association Notable Book of 2015.
In this thesis, I focused on two main aspects. First, I made sure not to omit elements that the author directly references from Jane Eyre. Examples include specific names like "Gates Street", "Lowood Corporation", and "Thorn Street", as well as its well-known phrase, "Reader" from Jane Eyre. Also, when translating the characters' dialogue, I reflected each character's speech patterns in their lines. For example, Uncle Sang is characterized as speaking "Broken English" and regardless of his vocabulary, he is unable to produce fluent sentences―a characteristic I tried to preserve. For Beth, I attempted to translate her dialogue using literary language as much as possible to capture her character trait of speaking in an unnecessarily pedantic manner, as befits her character setting.
