The market size of ceramic injection molding, which is one of the molding methods suited to such demands and requirements of our time, is growing rapidly; and accordingly there has been active research into the improvement of the process and expansion of the applicable field.
Powder injection molding is a process for applying ceramic and metal manufacturing technique. It is a molding technique by mixing ceramic power with a binder and producing a feedstock for enabling injection molding to ceramic component. However, the feedstock for ceramic injection molding generates various defects such as flow mark and weld line due to considerably low fluidity when injecting with highly viscous and thermally conductive material.
This study aims to optimize the injection molding process by applying injection molding CAE by using a finite element method to the mass production process for the strap holder of a digital camera of S Company, which is produced with a ceramic injection molding process. The study conducted the interpretation of injection molding process by using 3DTIMON, which is a commercial interpretation software. In order to produce highly reliable results, the filling process, packing process, and cooling process were interpreted by measuring the characteristics of PVT as well as the melting viscosity, which is a rheological feature that is most influential to the results in injection molding interpretation.
As the result, the metallic pattern for a hot runner system was selected as a case study and manufactured with preventing flaws in ceramic injection molding. By applying this technique to a mass production process and forecasting the optimized injection cycle time, production cost of injection mold ceramics will be reduced.
