There is a growing need to measure the level of national informatization and the effect of informatization policies in order to develop better national informatization policies in the future. According to this need, this study aims to analyzing international Informatization Indicies to offer objective policy information.
Almost all Informatization related indices indicate that Korea is well-advanced in IT infrastructure. It leads the world in the broadband internet access, with the number of Internet user ranked the third in the world. These strength in IT infrastructure significantly contributes to the enhancement of the national competitiveness.
However, this study identifies some weakness in terms of IT indices such as: Internet tariff, the number of Internet secure servers. Among these weakness, the promotion of software and content industry should be advanced to increase the number of the Internet secure servers.
Though, along with the above direct and immediate measures, the national statistics management system needs to be reexamined to utilize the Informatization indices effectively for policy-making. Our statistics and survey experts should continuously collaborate with the international organizations and participate in international research activities.
