The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a weight control program on body mass index, serum lipid levels (total cholesterol, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein, and low density lipoprotein), self-regulation behavior, and body image of obese college women.
Forty-seven obese college women were divided into two groups, 22 women for the experimental group and 25 women for the control group. The weight control program was comprised of traffic-light diet, jumping-rope exercise, and behavior modification method administered over a 12 weeks period. The experimental group underwent regular jumping-rope exercise three days per week (30-40 minutes per session) and group counseling with traffic-light diet education one day per week (60-90 minutes per session).
The data were collected from May 29 to September 17 of 2004. Body mass index, serum lipid levels, self-regulation behavior, and body image were assessed in both groups before and after the 12 weeks intervention. At 12 weeks after intervention was suspended, the experimental group was again assessed. The data were analyzed by the statistical program SPSS. χ²-test, Fisher's exact test, and t-test were employed to observe homogeneity between two groups. The t-test and ANCOVA were used to look at any differences between two groups. One-factor repeated measures ANOVA was used to see any changes among the three assessment periods within the experimental group.
The results of this study were as follows; ·Body mass index of the experimental group with the intervention was significantly lower than that of the control group.
·There were no significant differences in total cholesterol and triglyceride between experimental and control group. While high density lipoprotein of the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group, and low density lipoprotein of the experimental group was significantly lower than that of the control group.
·Self-regulation behavior of the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group.
·Body image of the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group.
·According to the 3 assesment periods, there was significant difference in body mass index within the experimental group.
·There were no significant differences in total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein, and low density lipoprotein among assessment periods, while there was significant difference in triglyceride within the experimental group among assessment periods.
·Self-regulation behavior within the experimental group was significantly different among assessment periods.
·Body image within the experimental group was significantly different among assessment periods.
In conclusion, the weight control program had positive effect on obese college women's body mass index, high density lipoprotein, low density lipoprotein, self-regulation behavior, and body image.
