This research was examined archaeometric implication and material characteristics of crucibles, melted materials inside them, potteries and roof tiles from the Wonshinheungdong site Yuseonggu in Daejeon, Korea. Also, excavated relics were analysed to identify manufacturing technologies and relationships with the crucibles.
Wonshinheungdong relic site in Daejeon is located in a sedimentary stratum by small basin. Geology of the area consists mainly of Jurassic two mica granite, intruded quartz porphyry of mesozoic and granophyre. This area has alluvium that is formed along the a small flowing water at the gapcheon stream.
The cover was excavated from No. 6 Well in study. It was carried out quantitative analysis using X-Ray Diffraction and EPMA for this cover. In result of it was found to be talc with SiO2 63.76 wt% and MgO 27.27wt%. The include crucible, pottery, and roof tiles from the Wonshinheungdong site include mostly quartz, orthoclase, plagioclase, and mica, but their size and roundness varied. Pottery had rather refined base soil, while roof tiles and crucibles had unrefined base soil. It is presumed that poettry used for dutable jar as compared with crucible and roof tiles.
The shape of crucibles excavated in this site is not clear and the thickness of its is not enough to assume its use. Most melted materials are gray in color and identified to be multiporous vitreous silicate compounds that mostly consist of SiO2-Al2O3. This composition is different from that of general glass. Some samples were contained pieces of copper, bronze, and segregation of tin and oxidized tin was detected by X-Ray Diffraction analysis. Thus they were classified into bronze crucible slag. However, some samples with reddish bluish glassy texture or were high in CaO content. Also, various materials had abnormally high CaO and Al2O3 contents. This result is high probable that these materials are sublinated amorphous compounds by calcination process of melted crucible.
All crucible, poettry and roof tile samples in the study were very similar patterns with physical nireralogial and geochemical evolution trend but various preparation were applied to pottery.
This study was examined provenance interpretation of raw materials base soil for the crucible, pottery and roof tiles. The result confirmed it through soil texture comparision of the soil around the wonshinheungdong site and the crucible, pottery and roof tiles. Therefore, all crucible, pottery and roof tile samples were produced using the same raw materials from the host rocks around of the site area.
It was assumed firing temperature from result of DTA/TG and XRD for crucible, pottery and roof tile. In result of all samples were presumed to be formed 900℃ to 1,000℃ based on phase transition of clay minerals. But hard pottery, mullite was detected and plagioclase was not detected which means this pottery had experienced firing between 1,050℃ to 1,150℃.
