      Self-determination has been largely identified as an essential educational outcome for students with disabilities in America and Korea during the last decades. Taking into account the successful outcomes of self-determination and accumulated evidence of interventions to promote students’ self-determination, it is critical to examine key stakeholders' perceptions of self-determination in order to provide students with consistent supports in various settings. Therefore, the purpose of this research synthesis is to investigate studies that examined key stakeholders' perceptions on self-determination in America and Korea to provide implications for future research and practice in Korea. Based upon the criteria identified in this study, a total of 28 articles (9 Korean articles, 19 American articles) were included. Once selected, each study was analyzed in terms of the following variables: (a) the definition of self-determination, (b) study topics, (c) participants, (d) publication years, (e) research methods, and (f) measurements used in each study. Based upon the findings of this study, implications for future study are provided as follows: (a) identifying the definition of self-determination in a Korean context, (b) investigating studies linking individualized educational plans and self-determination as well as balancing the perceptions of the importance on sub self-determination skills, (c) expanding study participants, and (d) enlarging the scope of research methods. In addition, suggestions to apply the perceived importance of self-determination in both schools and homes are discussed.

Taking into account the successful outcomes of self-determination and accumulated evidence of interventions to promote students’ self-determination, it is critical to examine key stakeholders' perceptions of self-determination in order to provide students with consistent supports in various settings.       장애학생의 자기결정 증진은 일반교육과정 접근성을 향상시키고 학생들이 성공적으로 전환기를 맞이할 수 있도록 도움을 주어, 학생의 삶의 질을 향상시키는데 핵심적인 영역으로 그 중요성을 인정받고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 최근 2000년부터 2011년까지 자기결정 인식을 조사한 한국과 미국의 연구를 분석하여 자기결정의 어떤 측면이 연구되었는지를 조사하고, 장애학생의 자기결정을 향상시키기 위한 기초자료를 마련하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 선정기준에 따라 최종적으로 선정된 총 28편(국내연구 9편, 미국연구 19편)의 자기결정 인식 관련 논문들을 자기결정 정의, 연구주제, 연구대상, 발표연도에 따른 연구 분포, 연구방법, 측정도구의 6가지 주제로 세부적으로 분석하였다. 분석결과를 바탕으로 자기결정 연구의 국내․외 연구동향 차이점을 알아보고, 장애학생의 자기결정을 증진시키기 위해 향후 연구를 위한 제언 및 교육 현장과 가정에서 자기결정을 효과적으로 적용하기 위한 제언들이 제공되었다
