Autism is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder with atypical social interaction, communication, repetitive behavior and cognition deficit. Valproic acid(VPA) use during pregnancy has been linked to autism and VPA rat model clearly indicats a strong concordance with some of the main symptoms and pathologies of autism. In the present study, we investigated the effects of treadmill exercise on motor function, perkinje cells, and reactive astrocytes on the cerebellum of VPA rat model. The rats were divided into 4 groups; control group(n=10), exercise grouop(n=10), VPA injection group(n=10) and VPA injection and exercise group(n=10). Rats in the exercise group were forced to run in the treadmill for 30 min, five times per weeks for 4 weeks. After the last exercise session, rota-rod test was performed for evaluating motor function. In the VPA injection group, treadmill exercise enhanced motor function and alleviated loss of purkinje cells in the cerebellum. In addition, treadmill exercise decreased astrocyte activation on the cerebellum of the VPA injection group. As show in the present study, treadmill exercise may provide therapeutic value for the treatment of autism patient's brain injury.
