      Rural development policy has supported rural tourism as a means to diversify rural economy, and the production of local and regionally denominated food as a means to differentiate agricultural production. The aim of this study is to address tourists' decision to buy local food products while visiting rural areas. The empirical evidence points to two important conclusions. First, visitors who choose to purchase local food products have distinct characteristics that differentiate them from visitors who do not usually consume local food products. Second, the visitors who buy local food products depends highly on their habits concerning food consumption and personal and neutral information. The findings should be of interest to practitioners of rural development as they point out to possible market segmentation and communication potentials.
