근세 세계화(archaic globalisation)의 맥락에서 본 조선시대사 = An Examination of Korean History in the Context of Archaic Globalisation: A Focus on Chosŏn Dynasty Historical Research in Europe

국문 초록 (Abstract)

유럽 내에서 조선시대사 연구는 한국학 (Korean Studies)이라고 하는 분과 아래에서 행해지고 있다. 한국학은 한국의 정치, 사회, 문화, 역사 등 종합적으로 이해하고자 하는 지역학의 하나이다. 당연히 이런 종합적인 이해를 위한 노력으로 인해 다양한 주제와 시기를 넘나들므로, 한국학이 다루는 범위는 아주 넓다. 당대 한국과 역사 속의 한국, 그리고 앞으로 다가올 미래의 한국까지 포함하는 학문 분야인 것이다. 한국학의 조선시대사 연구는 이런 넓은 범위 안의 한 분과이다. 유럽 내에서 한국의 관심 증가에 따라 이런 한국학과 그 분과인 조선시대사에 대한 연구도 꾸준히 증가하고 있다. 하지만 유럽에서의 한국학 연구는 전근대시기 보다는 근대 그리고 현대시기에 집중하여 이루어지고 있다. 또한 전근대시기 연구에서는, 조선후기에 많은 관심이 집중되며, 고대시기나 고려시기는, 원래부터 연구가 많지 않은 분야인 전근대 시기에서도 더 작은 부분을 차지하고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 유럽 내 조선시대사 연구는 의미있는 연구 결과들을 내놓고 있다. 이들은 영미권의 세계화 연구 경향에 따라 연구되어, 세계사와 동아시아사적 차원에서 조선시대사를 보는 경향이 크다. 본 논문은 최근의 이런 유럽 내 조선시대사 연구들을 통해, 세계화의 맥락에서의 한국사를 고찰해 보고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Within Europe, scholars in the field of Korean Studies are actively engaged in researching the history of the Chosŏn Dynasty. Korean Studies, as an area of study, aims to comprehensively explore various facets of Korea, including its politics, society, culture, and history. Consequently, Korean Studies encompasses a broad spectrum of topics and historical periods, spanning from contemporary Korea to its rich historical past and even its future. Studying on the history of the Chosŏn Dynasty constitutes an integral part of this expansive field within Korean Studies. As interest in Korea continues to burgeon in Europe, research endeavours focusing on Korean Studies and the history of the Chosŏn Dynasty, undertaken by scholars in the discipline, are steadily gaining momentum. Nevertheless, it is noteworthy that research on Korean Studies in Europe predominantly centres on the modern and contemporary periods, with relatively less emphasis on the pre-modern era. Moreover, within the pre-modern period, there is a prevailing concentration on the late Chosŏn period, while the ancient and Koryŏ periods occupy a relatively smaller niche within this field of study.
Despite these tendencies, research on the history of the Chosŏn Dynasty conducted in Europe yields substantial and insightful findings. These outcomes are frequently situated within a global and East Asian historical context, aligning with prevailing academic trends in the English-speaking world. This research endeavours to explore the history of Korea within the framework of globalisation, drawing upon recent research on the history of the Chosŏn Dynasty conducted within the European academic landscape.
