This study is a descriptive research to compare and analyze the educational needs and performance of diabetic patients and nurses, respectively. Data collection was conducted from June 10, 2020 to June 29, 2020 for 65 diabetic patients and 69 nurses caring for diabetic patients in one university hospital in Gwangju. As for the educational needs and performance, the tool developed by Seon-young Park was modified and supplemented by Ji-hye Lee, and then the tool that was verified for validity was used. The collected data were analyzed using t-test and analysis of variance.
The results of this study are as follows.
1. The average of the educational needs of the diabetic patients by area was 2.75 points for the diabetic group and 3.30 points for the nurse group, which was statistically significant (t=-6.127, p<.001). In addition, the average of the items perceived by diabetic patients on the education performance of nurses by area was 2.49 points, and the average of the actual education performance by area of the nurse group was 2.77 points, which was statistically significant (t= -2.777, p=.006).
2. The priority of the educational needs for each area that a diabetic patient wants was ① complications ② characteristics of the disease ② medications ④ physical activity and exercise ⑤ meals ⑥ continuous management and other areas ⑦ risk factors, followed by the nurse's educational performance by area recognized by the patient. The rankings were ① risk factors ② physical activity and exercise ③ complications ④ medications ⑤ continuous management and other areas ⑥ disease characteristics ⑦ meals.
However, the ranking of educational needs by area that nurses think of is ① medication ② continuous management and other areas ③ complications ④ risk factors ⑤ characteristics of the disease ⑥ physical activity and exercise ⑦ meals, and the nurse's actual educational performance ranking was ① medication ② Risk factors ③Continuous management and other areas ④Disease characteristics ⑤Physical activities and exercise ⑥Complications ⑦Meals.
3. The younger the patient's age (F=6.963, p=.002), the more unmarried (F=3.210, p=.047), the higher the level of education (F=5.188, p=.001), the monthly income. The higher the number (F=5.265, p=.008), the higher the educational demand was statistically significant.
Looking at the results of the above study, there was a difference in priorities in the educational needs of diabetic patients and nurses by area, and both patients and nurses had lower educational performance than educational needs. In particular, it was found that the patient's satisfaction with the diabetes education service was relatively low, as a difference was generated between the actual education performance compared to the education demand the patient wanted. Therefore, it is necessary to actively conduct customized education tailored to the needs of patients through preliminary investigations of diabetic patients.
