It may well be said that the period of enlightenment in Korea was filled with such tasks as resistang Japanese Imperialism, repudiating medieval social structures, shaping modern society, and displaying and mobilizing national capabilities. The perild is full of nation-wide arguments over such endeavors as listed above, A germ of such movements is found in Choi Jae Woo's Attalnment of the Way―Tonghak, Chondokyo―in 1860 : in 1910, we also witness a new wave caused by the loss of soverignty. The enlightenment period reaches its height in the March 1 Movement in 1919, The period from 1860 to 1919, therefore, covers our literary period of enlightenment. The researcher attemps an analysis and examination of the period from an the point of view of the of History of Literary Thoughts.
First a discussion of the analytical criteria of modern consciousness is made. Based upon these criteria, forerunners of enlightenment are classified: (1) conservative Yurim group, (2) Pro-Japanese Enlightenment group, and (3) Traditional Conservative group. This classification leads to Pseudo-Enlightenment and writers' conciousness, in which writers merely attempted an immitation of the West without complying with the demands of the time. Choe Nam-Sun as a poet of the new poetry, and Lee Kwang-Soo with his nationalism of unknown identity are supreme examples. The latter made a mistake in history because of his blind behaviour. By criticizing the literary problems created by Lee Kwang-soo, some suggestions for desirable changes in our literary history has been attempted.
The researcher contends that it is time Korea discarded the stance of attempting to fit Korean literature to Western literary theories without any regards to national identity.
