With the rapid growth of domestic economy and the improvement of living standard, women's desire of becoming beautiful, pleasant and happy has increased. In addition, with women's active advance into society, their opportunities of expressing themselves and interests in their looks have increased and therefore they have settled these desires with make-up. Make-up is an efficient tool to make a person attractive. So far, the pattern of make-up has been classified, specialized and systematized all the more. Recently, in addition to its role of pursuing beauty, make-up has become an important activity of protecting skin and pursuing human mental/physical health. In this regard, color-tone cosmetics and functional cosmetics have been continuously developed and people's interests in these cosmetics have greatly increased as well. With this trend, beauty-related industry has grown rapidly and the importance of related products has increased as well. In this vein, it seems to be meaningful to examine the purchase and use of cosmetics among women in their 20s-30s, the main body of consumption, in order to find out the basic data on the development of products and marketing in cosmetic business circles in the future.
Before carrying out this study, preliminary survey of 45 persons was carried out over the period from March 17~19, 2011, thus modifying questionnaires and enhancing its completion. And a questionnaire survey of 200 women in their 20s-30s was carried out over the period from April 27 to May 4, 2011.
In this study, the investigator examined the general purchase patterns of cosmetics among female consumers in their 20s-30s, their purchase and use of basic cosmetics and color-tone cosmetics, and their unused cosmetics. Study findings are as follows:
First, at the time of purchase of cosmetics, they most highly considered the suitability of cosmetics to their skin conditions. And they presented the pattern of planned purchase and consumption of cosmetics. In the selection of cosmetics, they attached great importance to the use experience in the past and many women purchased cosmetics via Internet shopping malls. In order to produce a variety of moods for situations, they used more than one cosmetic of the same category.
Second, a more than 90.0% of respondents had skins, lotions, cleansing products and sun blocks, thus presenting the fact that the interests in basic cosmetics were higher among women in their 20s-30s. As for basic cosmetics, they purchase new products only after completely using the existing ones. In addition to the existing products, they purchased other products in order to improve skin troubles.
Third, an 88.0% of respondents had BB cream and a 67.0% of them used it daily. The convenience of BB cream seemed to increase its use frequency. As for the color-tone cosmetics, they repurchased it for the purpose of mood change or impulsively. Their purchase of other color-tone cosmetics in addition to the existing ones was related to its characteristics of which colors were different by seasons.
Fourth, many female consumers had basic cosmetics unused. The reason why they did not use these basic cosmetics was that they did not feel the necessity of its use or they felt bothersome for its use. As for the basic cosmetics unused, they responded to use it someday or discard it. This response seems to imply the handling method of basic cosmetics unused among women in their 20s-30s. As for color-tone cosmetics, a 99.0% of respondents had color-tone cosmetics unused. The reason why they did not use it was that they did not feel the necessity of its use or it was not suitable for them. As for the handling of unused color-tone cosmetics, they were going to use it in appropriate days or discard it someday or give it to acquaintances. If the brand of unused cosmetics launches new products, a 67.3% of respondents want to use it as a challenge to new ones.
In conclusion, the business circles of cosmetics and cosmetic business entities must take above study findings into account in their developing and marketing of products.
