The purpose of the study was to examine the relationships among dichotomous thinking, dysfunctional perfectionism and suicide ideation in adolescents and the mediating role of the hopelessness depression symptom in the relationships among dichotomous thinking, dysfunctional perfectionism, and suicide ideation.
A total of 544 middle school students in Ulsan, South Korea participated in the study. Participants completed questionnaires assessing Suicide Ideation (The Korean version of the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation ;K-BSI), Dichotomous Thinking (Dichotomous Thinking Index-30 Revised ; DTI-30), Dysfunctional Perfectionism (Two-dimensional Perfectionism Scale ; TPS), and Hopelessness Depression Symptom (Hopelessness Depression Symptom Questionnaire ; HDSQ)
Major findings of the study were the following:
First of all, suicide ideation, dichotomous thinking, dysfunctional perfectionism, and hopelessness depression symptom showed a significant positive correlation.
Secondly, hopelessness depression symptom partially mediated the relationship between dichotomous thinking and suicide ideation.
Thirdly, hopelessness depression symptom partially mediated the relationship between dysfunctional perfectionism and suicide ideation.
Fourthly, in relationships among dichotomous thinking, dysfunctional perfectionism, and suicide ideation, dichotomous thinking was significantly and positively correlated with suicide ideation, and hopelessness depression fully mediated the relationship between dysfunctional perfectionism and suicide ideation.
Fifthly, a significant gender difference was observed in terms of suicide ideation, and hopelessness depression symptom.
The relationship between dichotomous thinking and suicide ideation was not statistically significant in female adolescents.
Current findings suggest that dichotomous thinking, dysfunctional perfectionism, and hopelessness depression symptom might be important factors to consider in the evaluation and treatment of suicide ideation in the adolescent population.
