예술적 창의성과 비판적 독서 = Artistic Creativity and Critical Thinking

This paper considers the relationship between artistic creativity and critical reading, under the ‘finalist theory’ which explains the artistic creation as a problem-solving process. The process of artistic creation consists of finding out adaptive and significant questions in the context of art-world and solving them by using the artistic media; and critical reading consists of finding out right questions in the context of writing and solving them by examining the writer`s arguments and intentions. Artistic creation requires situational judgements and problem-solving abilities. This paper argues that critical thinking, as conceived as the ability of raising right questions and pursuing better judgement and decision, is a bridge that links between artistic creativity and critical thinking. We can thereby discuss critical thinking in the appreciation of art and criticism. Appreciation can be said to be the intellectual process of critically examining the artist`s problem he creatively finds out and the answer he suggests in the artistic media. Thus the ability of creation and that of appreciation are not separate but stand in such a relation that the ability enhanced in one area can contribute towards the other. Here intervenes critical reading.
