      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

I review overlapped translations of Bianfatongyi in representative two magazine, Seou and Bulletin of Daehanheyeophoe at Daehan Empire era. Bianfatongyi was published 11 years ago from the time of Seou’s translation, 1907 but it was a still influential reference to the enlightenment movement of Daehan Empire. In spite of their respect to an author, Liang Qichao, translators, Bak Eunsik and Hong Gilju, adapt the original text according to the context of Daehan Empire because of differences between Korea and China. Their adaptation displays that the nationality is preferred over the pre-modern universal values of This Culture of Ours(斯文) in Korean enlighten movements. Moreover, Bak seeks heterogeneous styles through serials of translation in Seou to meet diverse demands of versatile readers, since Korean language has no common grammars and dictionaries in Daehan Empire era. Also, he omits original text’s portion which can be interpreted as Sino-centrism with intention but propagates its school system setting intensive principles based on the respect toward Confucius. His translation is the result of practicing the aim of Seou, the self-strengthening of Daehan Empire however, Confucius is still universal figure over nationality.
