This study investigated not only the existence of differentially functioned items due to gender and major field but also the amount of differential functioning in mathematic area of the fifthe tryout of College Scholastic Ability Test(CSAT).
In this study, the randomly selected data of the fifth tryout of CSAT, which consists of 831 men and 787 women(774 literature and 844 science), were analyzed. Mantel-Haenszel method was employed to detect differentially functioned items. Also, Mantel-Haenszel x² statistics and ΔMH index were computed as criteria to identify the differentially functioning item.
The important findings of this study are as follows. Five items out of twenty mathematic items were found as differentially functioned. Among those five items, only one item(Item 10) was found as differentially functioned item due to gender after controlling the effect of major field. On the contrary, three items(Item 1, 3, 4) were found as differentailly functioned due to major field by controlling the gender effect. The remaining one item(Item 15) was identified as differentially functioned due to gender as well as major field.
The conclusion of this study was summarized as major field differentially functioned items rather than gender did in mathematic area. Finally, it is desirable to consider the differentially functioned items by relating those items with item content for improving the test reliability of CSAT.
