This thesis is intended to examine some problems of the Protestant mission in the period from 1862 to 1874 through the Chiao-hui hsin-pao 敎會新報 (The News of Churches). This news paper was founded by American missionary Young John Allen is Shanghai 上海 in 1868. It introduced various problems of Christianity, domestic and foreign news and western civilization to Chinese people. So it proffers us useful research materials of the missionary enterprise, various anti-Christian movement and foreign relation of China.
In the first half of the nineteenth century, when the Protestant mission began to be introduced into China, its influence was meager. However, after the 1860 when the Sino-French Treaty of Tientsin guaranteed the freedom to preach and practise Christianity anywhere in the empire, its power largely increase, though its missionary work was localized mainly in open ports and was less active as compared with the Catholic Church. At that time in China there were the presbyterian, Baptist, Methodist. London Church etc. There sects established nation-wide parish organization and their individual effort to expand their own sect contributed largely to extension of the Protestant Mission as a whole.
Though somewhat critical in regard to the Rites Controversy, they assumed a concilitory attitude toward the tradional Chinese Confucianism and its social system. Neverthless, Anti-Christian movement accured frequently, and as a result many church buildings were demolished and the missionaries and foreigners were killed. The gentry class led these movements and local official were indifferent to or tacitly approved them. Thus Western powers wished to solve these problems by diplomatic means. However, when they dispatched special envoy and concluded treaties in which they demanded the punishment of criminals and the reparations, they have resorted to the gunboat policy.
