Every organization is confronted with errors. Errors can result in negative consequences such as faulty products as well as positive ones through learning and innovation. Many preceding studies argue that a high-organizational error management culture, characterized by quick error detection and effective handling, communication about errors, and sharing error knowledge etc., reduces negative and promotes positive error consequences.
In line with those studies, the authors of this article expect that such a high-organizational error management culture plays a key role in the Korean financial institutions effectively managing errors. On the other hand, an error aversion culture, characterized by fearing the occurrence of errors and covering up errors, doesn’t effectively control the errors.
To test our hypothesis, we conducted a empirical test, surveying 50 Korean asset management companies, to find out whether the level of error management culture affects the fund valuation errors, which is the typical operational risk of asset management companies.
We found that organizational error management culture was significantly contributes to Korean asset management companies reducing fund valuation errors. However, we found no support for a relation between error aversion culture and fund valuation errors. Also, we found no support that ‘type of task’ and ‘operator quality’ play a moderating role in controlling the errors.
The results of this study suggest that asset management companies need to strengthen error management culture to effectively manage the errors.
