이 연구의 목적은 한국인 영어 학습자가 영어 자유 관계절과 간접 의문문에 대한 지식을 영어 원어민 수준으로 습득하였는지 고찰해 보려는 것이다. 영어의 자유 관계절(예: 'Karen ate what Fred offered to her')과 간접 의문문(예: 'Karen knew which dish Norton served to her')은 일견 구조적으로 유사해 보이나, 이 두 구문은 통사적으로 차이가 있다. 첫 번째 차이점은 주어-동사 수 일치에 관한 것이다. 자유 관계절이 문장의 주어로 올 때 동사는 wh-구와 수 일치를 하지만(예: 'Whatever books she has *is/are marked up with her notes'), 간접 의문문이 문장의 주어로 올 경우 항상 단수 동사가 쓰인다(예: 'Whatever books she has isn't/*aren't certain'). 두 번째 차이점은 선도(wh-구와 함께 전치사를 동반이동하는 것) 현상에 관한 것이다. 간접 의문문의 경우 전치사 선도가 가능한 반면(예: 'I’ll ask at what he was pointing') 자유 관계절의 경우 전치사 선도를 허용하지 않는다(예: *'I’ll buy at what he was pointing'). 한국인 영어 학습자는 EB(early biligual), AL(advanced leaner), IL(intermediate learner) 세 집단으로 나뉜다.

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether second language learners of English acquire knowledge of English free relatives (FRs) and indirect questions (IQs) to the level of native speakers. Although FRs (e.g., 'Karen ate what Fred offered to her') in English bear a close superficial resemblance to IQs (e.g., 'Karen knew which dish Norton served to her'), these two constructions differ syntactically. The first difference concerns subject-verb number agreement. If a free relative in subject position begins with a plural NP, the verb agrees in number with the wh-phrase (e.g., 'Whatever books she has *is/are marked up with her notes'). On the other hand, if an indirect question in subject position begins with a plural NP, the verb must be singular (e.g., 'Whatever books she has isn't/*aren't certain'). The second difference concerns pied-piping (i.e., taking the preposition along with the wh-phrase. In the case of IQs, but not FRs, prepositions can undergo pied-piping (e.g., 'I’ll ask at what he was pointing' vs. *'I’ll buy at what he was pointing'). While extensive research has been undertaken on the syntax of FRs, in the field of second language acquisition, little attention has been given to FRs. Thus, in this study, a forced-choice task was conducted to assess participants’ knowledge of number agreement in FRs and IQs. An acceptability judgment task was also used to test participants’ knowledge of pied-piping and preposition stranding in FRs and IQs. In both tasks, Korean learners of English (early bilinguals (EBs), advanced learners (ALs), intermediate learners (ILs)) were compared to a control group of native English speakers (NEs). The results of task 1 indicated that EBs and ALs acquired number agreement in FRs to the level of NEs. With regard to number agreement in IQs, there were no statistically significant differences between the four groups. Yet, contrary to expectations, even NEs exhibited poor performance in this task. The results of task 2 showed that all four groups considered pied-piping in FRs to be ungrammatical.
