The distribution of the constitutive heterochromatin and nucleolus organizer regions on the chromosomes of Kaloula borealis (Anura, Microhylidae) were analysed by means of conventional, C-banding and NOR-staining methods. The pericentromeric, interstitial and telomeric heterochromatin were present in the most of all chromosomes. The C-bands of each homologue showed very variable intensity. This indicated heterogeneity in the constituents of constitutive heterochromatin. Heteromorphism between the NORs-bearing chromosomes, and homologues 9 in the standard form and 12 in the varied one of the C-banded karyotypes were observed. The secondary constriction site itself was C-band negative. One male in varied form had a paracentric inversion within the large and small C-band blocks on the long arm of NORs-bearing chromosome pair. On the NORs-block position, one homologue revealed fused form of two large blocks or linked form of large and small silver blocks. On the basis of these NORs variations and C-band characteristics, possible mechanism of the chromosomal evolution in K. borealis was discussed.
