Background
The purpose of this study is to find out inappropriate attendance patterns in medical students on behalf of residents at graduate medical degree program, and to assess general perception of attendance.
Methods
The questionnaire was conveniently distributed to 76 students who are currently enrolled in 5th and 6th grade at the Korea University School of Medicine. It was composed of 3 parts. Part I was about the pattern of class attendance on behalf of residents. Part II was about the perception of general class attendance. Part III was about the perception of inappropriate class attendance on behalf of residents.
Results
In part I, 50 students out of 76 students (65.8%) had experiences of inappropriate attendance behavior. Over half did more than once. 90% of the students did it regardless of their will. 64% re-asked to do the attendance to their friends and junior colleague. In part II, 58 out of 76 students (76%) responded that class attendance is showing respect to professors. In part III, majority of the students thought inappropriate class attendance was unethical, and should not be conducted.
Conclusions
Inappropriate class attendance on behalf of the graduate medical degree residents seems to be widespread among medical school students. The education of academic integrity and the enhancement of clinical education for the medical profession should be performed.
