This article aims to survey the tendency of composition studies and to suggest the direction and task of them. For 30years, composition studies have remarkably developed in variety and depth. This article classifies existing composition studies into three types such as critical approach, expressive approach and rhetorical approach, and researches their orientation and pedagogy. Critical approach aims not to improve writing skill but liberate subject from dominant discourse. It leads to critical course which emphasize critical reading of dominant discourse. Expressive approach aims to foster aesthetic, moral development. It leads to course which value small group collaborative writing, free writing, reflective writing. Rhetorical approach covers research on genre, research on discourse community, research on writing instruction. This article suggests the direction and task of composition studies: (1) diversifying point of view through embracing the expressive approach and critical approach, (2) doing student-oriented studies including the composition capacity and characteristics of student, (3) developing various education genres useful in composition classroom, (4) developing pedagogical methods which are suitable for each approach.
