Children's Outdoor Play Behaviors and Playground Equipment Choices

국문 초록 (Abstract)

놀이는 아동발달의 통합적인 양상으로 볼 수 있다. 특히 유아들의 실외놀이 활동은 실외놀이 환경이 제공하는 놀잇감의 종류에 따라 다양한 형태로 나타난다. 이는 실외놀이 환경의 놀잇감이나 놀이기구가 유아들의 놀이 활동 및 놀이행동에 영향을 미친다는 것이다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 유아들이 실외놀이 환경에서 주어진 놀잇감 및 놀이기구와 어떤 사회적ㆍ인지적 놀이행동을 보이면서 상호작용을 하는지, 어떤 놀잇감과 놀이기구를 가장 많이 선택하는지 알아보고자 한다. 또한 질적분석 방법을 통해 유아들의 실외놀이 행동의 가치 및 본질을 분석하였으며, 놀이기구 및 움직이는 놀잇감이 활용되어지는 상황을 직적으로 분석하여 유아들이 놀이기구를 선택하는 의미를 알아보고자 하였다. 이와 같은 유아들의 실외놀이 행동 분석을 통해 실외놀이시간에 유아들의 비놀이행동이나 놀이행동 이외의 활동을 줄여주고, 반면에 사회적 놀이와 인지적 놀이 활동을 증진시켜줄 수 있는 놀이환경을 구성하는데 필요한 요소를 제공하고자 하였다. 연구결과에 의하면, 고정된 복합놀이 기구만으로는 유아들의 다양한 실외놀이 활동을 야기 시키지 못하는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 실외놀이환경을 구성함에 있어서 유아들간의 사회적 상호작용을 증진시키고 인지적인 놀이활동을 촉진시키기 위해서는 움직이는 놀잇감(모래놀이 기구, 세발자전거 등)이 필수적인 것으로 밝혀졌다. 특히 세발자전거나 주유기 등 움직이는 놀잇감을 더 많이 제공하면 유아들의 기능놀이를 극화놀이로 발전시킬 수 있음이 밝혀졌다. 무엇보다 실외놀이 환경에 움직이는 놀잇감을 제공하면 유아들이 좋아하는 그네나 자전거 타기 등을 위해 장시간 줄을 서는 시간을 줄여줄 수 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이와 같은 연구 결과는 실외놀이 환경 구성가, 실외놀이 기구 회사, 실외놀이 환경 전문가 등에게 실외놀이 기구의 실제적인 활용도 및 가치를 알려줄 뿐만 아니라 유아교사들이 놀이를 실제 교육과정에 반영하여 유아들의 사회ㆍ정서적 발달을 도모하는 계기를 마련해줄 것으로 기대되어 진다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Play is an integral aspect of children's development. However, play does not occur in a vacuum, rather it happens within a context. This context has physical and social dimensions. Without an understanding of what that context is and of how it affects a child's play, we cannot hope o gain a full understanding of the phenomenon. Children play with something and/or someone, even if only in imagination, in a certain place and at a certain time, In this sense, it is evident that varying types of outdoor environments and available equipment influence the behavior of children in different ways. Thus, the study's primary focus was examine qualitative aspects of children's play behaviors in an outdoor environment: to investigate what is the nature of functional play, dramatic play, and chase games and rough and tumble play. To investigate the nature of play qualitatively, the categories of play behaviors were quantitatively examined prior to qualitative analysis.. The results of this study showed that children preferred equipment that does something movable and/or that is complex. Most unoccupied and onlooker behavior occurred at the playhouse near the wheeled vehicle path and the plastic timbers around the swing area. The playhouse was not a popular place for the children because it didn't offer enough loose parts. It was also evident that loose parts were the major components for preschool children's outdoor play. Children preferred to engage in functional play in the wheeled vehicle path, the swing, the teeter-totter, and the open space areas. The functional play seemed to enhance the children's self-confidence and their self-esteem. It was also found that each piece of equipment and play area on the playground could be used by the children for their dramatic play enactment. The area with the sand surface was the place most frequently selected by the children for dramatic play. The results of this study clearly shows that play provides the child with the copportujnity to make sense out of the world by using available tools.
