The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in the development of economic conceptions in children according to age and sex through measuring their degree of understanding of the ownership of the means of production and products and the economic function of the means of production.
To achieve that purpose, the following study topics were selected.
1. Are there any differences in children's understanding of the ownership of the means of production according to age and sex?
2. Are there any differences in children's understanding of the ownership of products according to age and sex?
3. Are there any differences in children's understanding of the economic function of the means of prouction according to age and sex?
The subjects were 160 children consisting of four age groups. Each group consisted of 20 boys and 20 girls of five, seven, nine, and eleven years old who attended a primary school and a kindergarten in Seoul.
The questions and levels of answers in the studies of Berti, Bombi and Lis(1982) and Berti and Bombi(1988) were modified and adopted to measure the development of economic conceptions in children.
The data gathered through interviews were analyzed by the two-way ANOVA and Duncan's post hoc tests.
According to the results of this study, there are clear differences in the development of economic conceptions in children according to age, but not according to sex. Also there are no interaction effects between age and sex.
The results of this study are summarized as follows:
First, children of five years old consider that the users of the means of production are the owners of the means. Children of seven years old consider that the users and their employers are the owners of the means. Children of nine years old understand, even though not clearly, the existence of the owners. Children of eleven years old are able to tell the difference between the employees and the owners.
Second, while children of five and seven years old can not understand the ownership of products, children of nine years old consider that the direct users of the means of production are the owners of the products. Children of eleven years old understnad vaguely that the ownership of the products comes from ownership of the means of production.
Third, children of five years old do not understand the economic function of the means of production. Children of seven years old are at the beginning stage in their understanding of the relationship between production and buying-selling. Children of nine years old understand more clearly that relationship. Children of eleven years old understand about profits from buying and selling and service relations.
