Exhibiting peace : a study of museums for peace in South Korea

A museum for peace is reckoned to be a place for disseminating a sense of peace through its three roles: Preservation of peace-related memories, peace education and peace-making. Recently, in this regard, the importance of museums for peace has increased. Nevertheless museums for peace in South Korea have not been recognized by the general public as places for practicing those functions. Rather than they are mostly regarded as just memorials. Thus, it is necessary to have a systemic understanding of museums for peace to better comprehend the whole array of options for museums for peace in South Korea. This study compares existing seven museums for peace focusing on their planning and opening period, the main initiative behind their opening and current management bodies, their themes and purposes and the thesis aims to build a theoretical basis of museums for peace in South Korea.
Traditionally, museums for peace in South Korea were initiated and have been managed by government-based organizations. These organizations have tended to think of symbolic meaning when they decided the site for the museums, and themes of museums were mostly limited in negative peace issues showcasing the past events. Furthermore, those museums have presented their purposes as honoring and setting particular national identities. However, the traditional paradigm that has appeared in most museums for peace has shown a sign of transformation with the opening of the Center for Peace Museum. This particular museum has distinctive characteristics compared to other museums including site selection for easy access, exhibits on topical issues and concern with issue beyond Korea. Such characteristics of the Center for Peace Museum can be regarded as a new trend emerging among museums for peace in South Korea. A new trend is not confined to this one museum and it has started to appear in various circles in Korean society. So it is possible to see this new trend as a new paradigm which will bring out a paradigm-shift among museums for peace in South Korea.

평화를 위한 박물관은 평화에 관한 기억들을 보존하고 평화교육과 평화를 창설하는
세가지 기능들을 통해서 평화의식을 전달하는 곳이다. 이러한 관점에서 최근 평화
를 위한 박물관의 중요성은 높아지고 있다. 하지만 한국에 있는 평화를 위한 박물
관들은 대중들에 의해 그러한 박물관의 기능이 인식되지 못한 채 주로 기념관으로
만 알려져 왔다. 따라서 한국에 있는 평화를 위한 박물관을 총체적으로 살펴보기
위한 체계적인 이해가 필요한 상황이다. 그러므로 이 연구는 한국에 있는 평화를
위한 박물관 일곱 곳을 그들의 기획 및 개관 년도, 박물관 기획 및 경영 주체, 박물
관의 주제 그리고 목적에 기반하여 비교하고 한국에 있는 평화를 위한 박물관에 대
한 이론적인 바탕을 세우는 것을 목적으로 한다.
전통적으로 한국에 있는 평화를 위한 박물관들은 정부를 기반으로 한 단체
들에 의해 주로 기획되고 경영되어왔다. 그리하여 대부분의 박물관들은 박물관의
위치를 선정할 때 주로 상징적인 의미를 중시하는 경향을 보였으며, 박물관의 주된
주제는 주로 과거에 기반한 소극적인 평화 이슈들이었다. 또한 박물관의 목적 또한
기념 및 특정한 정체성을 세우는 것에 국한되어 있었다. 하지만 평화를 위한 박물
관에서 나타난 전통적인 패러다임은 “평화박물관” 의 등장과 함께 변화의 조짐을
보이게 되었다. 이 특별한 박물관은 다른 박물관과 비교하여 뚜렷한 특징: 접근성을
중시한 장소의 선정, 현재적이고 지역적인 문제들을 그리고 한국을 넘어선 이슈들
을 전시 하는 뚜렷한 특징들을 보이고 ‘평화박물관’의 특징은 한국의 평화를 위한
박물관 중에서 나타난 새로운 동향으로 인식될 수 있다. 이 새로운 동향은 ‘평화박
물관’ 에 국한되지 않고 한국 사회내의 다양한 곳에서 발견되기 시작했다. 그리하여
이 새로운 동향은 앞으로의 한국의 평화를 위한 박물관에 패러다임 전환을 야기할
수 있는 새로운 패러다임으로 간주될 수 있다.
