International trade requires much time and money because of complicated customs clearance procedure, which has many stages with various parties involved. However, with the development of information technology, all related parties could be connected electronically and exchange data by the EDI. This technology contributed to increasing efficiency, by decreasing the time and cost for customs clearance procedure. Also, the rapid expansion of using the internet in real world influenced the customs system. Since 2004, the Korean government has built the Internet EDI, which gradually performed export, import, inspection and refund of duties. In this regard, this paper clarifies the problems of the electronic customs clearance system and suggests a way to maximize the utilization by studying previous studies, foreign countries cases and by interviews clearance brokers and consignees. First of all, the hinder against the speedy customs clearance should be eliminated. In other words, the system itself should be complemented and cooperation among the customs clearance house and related parties should be implemented. Second, service should be changed since the users are putting more value on the speed and stability compared to economical advantage. Third, training programs should be developed to enhance friendly environment for the users. Forth, the Internet EDI should be able to work with the VAN EDI to generate synergy effects. Finally, the internet EDI should be able to meet the international standard to realize the single-window.
