The purpose of this paper is to examine Bertrand Russell’s thoughts presented in his In the Praise of Idleness published in 1935 and to attempt to apply his thoughts to the purpose of general education in the present-day college education. Since idleness is generally understood as a vice, not as an object of praise, Russell’s praise of idleness is counter-intuitive. I shall explain why his ideas on idleness are appealing through examining his ideas in the context of his whole life, especially establishing his experimental education project, Beacon Hill School. Also I shall draw attention to my interpretation of the movie Downsizing and Michael Sandel’s recent criticism on meritocracy, which illuminates the genuine meaning of Russell’s thoughts on idleness. As the average labor hours will decrease, we should appreciate fully Russell’s claim that we should educate how to spend leisure time wisely.
