Study of honeybees(Apis mellifera) and bumblebees(Bombus terrestris) as pollinators for the melon raised in green house was executed during the blooming of melon(June 2005) and after harvesting the fruits of melon(July 2005). Comparison of characteristics among the fruits fertilized by honeybees, bumblebees, and traditionally-hand, the value as commodities was calculated and economic analysis of using pollinators in the melon cultivation was accomplished.
1. Honeybees stayed, on an average, 4.5 sec longer than bumblebees did in the flower of melon and 5.0 sec longer in female flower than male flower.
2. The length of glossa was, on an average, 4.17 ㎜ in Italian honeybees(Apis mellifera ligustica), 4.36 ㎜ in Caucasian honeybees(Apis mellifera caucasica), and 4.70 ㎜ in bumblebees(Bombus terrestris).
3. The weight of melon after harvest fruits fertilized by bumblebees and the seeds of melon fertilized by honeybees exceed in 20% more than the melon fertilized by traditionally-hand.
4. Through the economical analysis, the probit of pollinators used in fertilizing melon raised in green house was calculated by 480,000 Won per 300 pyong(~1000 ㎡).
