This study examined the transformation of the East Asian investiture system during the period of Yuan dynasty's hegemony, specifically through the lens of the ‘Mongol Impact’. By conducting a comparative analysis of Koryŏ, and the Trần dynasty of Đại Việt, this paper explored the structural changes in the diplomatic grammar of the investiture order and the nature of each state’s responses.
Prior to the rise of the Mongols, Koryŏ, and the Lý dynasty of Vietnam shared a common practice where successors ascended the throne immediately following the death of a predecessor, thereby eliminating any domestic political vacuum. In this traditional system, imperial investiture served as a post-facto confirmation of sovereign power that had already been established domestically, occurring with a significant time lag. However, this practice underwent a fundamental shift as the Mongol Empire began to utilize the right of investiture as a practical tool for exercising substantive control. The paths of Koryŏ, and the Trần dynasty diverged based on their differing responses to Yuan’s attempts to enforce this substantive investiture power.
In the case of Koryŏ, the Yuan’s right of investiture was substantively implemented, making imperial appointment a prerequisite for becoming king. Consequently, a ‘throne vacancy’ between the death of the former king and the investiture of the new one became inevitable. To minimize this gap, Koryŏ developed an active and rapid diplomatic strategy, requesting investiture simultaneously with the ‘notification of mourning(告哀)’. As a result, domestic accession ceremonies were postponed until after the formal investiture, and the ritual of ‘announcing the succession(告嗣位)’, which was predicated on independent accession, disappeared.
Conversely, the Trần dynasty of Vietnam resisted the Yuan’s substantive exercise of investiture power by refusing the ‘personal attendance of the monarch(君主親朝), which the Yuan demanded as a prerequisite. In response, the Yuan declined to invest the actual rulers of the Trần dynasty. Instead, they attempted to maintain the form of their investiture authority by appointing members of the Trần royal family who had defected to the Yuan as the ‘King of Annam’. This led to a unique practice where the Yuan referred to the actual Trần rulers as the ‘Crown Prince of Annam(安南國世子)’. In response, while the Trần dynasty maintained a tributary relationship with the Yuan, it did not request investiture; it carried out domestic successions independently without notifying the Yuan of the predecessor's death or the successor's accession.
In conclusion, while the ‘Mongol Impact’ manifested differently depending on the political and diplomatic environments of each state, it created a new grammar for the investiture system that was qualitatively different from the preceding era. These transformations persisted through appropriation and other means even after the period of Mongol hegemony. Therefore, the East Asian investiture system of this period must be understood with these transformative factors in mind.
