The emotional bonds of family members are weakening and the family conflicts are deepening in Korean families, since traditional family structure has been declined, nuclear-family has been isolated, and individualism has been pervaded under the rapid industrialization and urbanization. Furthermore, domestic violences cause physical, emotional, psychological, and social damages as well as family breakdown and juvenile delinquency. The violences against women have been justified as authority of a patriarchy because of patriarchical culture and neglected as private problem in the family.
The biggest reason which abused wives stay in violent situation is compassion and responsibility for their children (motherly sacrifice and obligation), also the other reasons are expectation to their husband''s transformation, economical difficulties owing to sexism in labor market, and efforts to keep a family because of patriarchal thought. It seems for abused wives to be the objective and value of life coping violent situation.
The purpose of this study is to examine resilience of the abused wives, responding the today''s trends which various efforts are increasing to eliminate the domestic violences with the change of consciousness. It tries to show a new perspective of resilience as a transforming life, while old perspectives are negative pathological ones. Also it studies how the objective of life, human relationship, and social supports influence upon the abused wives'' resilience; then it explores counseling strategy for prevention and intermediation in social welfare services and make a ground to lead personal internal resources.
This study establishes a stress-coping model as a model of resilience after examining precedent studies. According to the stress-coping model, The stress-coping process influences upon personal adaptation more than experiences of stress. It also influence upon adaptation with a dynamic relation to personal resources, family resources, and social environmental resources.
The objective of life (meaning/ value), human relationship (openness/ reliance/ communication/ understanding), social supports are used as independent variables, resilience (self-confidence/ communication efficiency/ optimistic orientation) is used as a dependent variable. The demographic factors such as age, religion, education, period of marriage, monthly income, number of children, occupation are used as control variables. Also the question about the abused situation is included in order to know how to treat the violent situation.
The questionnaire method was exercised for data collection, respondents were selected from 16 shelters in Seoul and Kyonggi-do. Distribution and collection was made by postal service or e-mail. It had done from March 10 to April 30, 2006; 112 questionnaires were collected among 130 (92.5%), 110 questionnaires were analyzed through SPSS 12.0; frequency analysis, statistical analysis, correlation analysis, multi-regression analysis were executed.
The hypotheses are that the higher the objective of life, human relationship, and social supports are, the more they influence upon resilience. The results of this study are as follows.
First, the meaning and value of life influence upon self-confidence among the objective of life (meaning/ value), human relationship (openness/ confidence/ communication/ understanding), and social supports. Second, the value of life, openness and communication capacity of human relationship influence upon communication efficiency among the objective of life, human relationship, and social supports. Third, only the value of life influences upon optimistic orientation among the objective of life, human relationship, and social supports.
There are many factors influence upon resilience of the abused wives; however, first of all, the meaning and value of life most influence upon it, then human relationship and social support also influence upon it, and all factors are inter-related.
Resilience means a capacity to cope difficulties as well as survival, an active process which grows responding the crisis and challenges, and is forming through openness to experiences and inter-reliance to others. Such resilience is original power and source for abused wives to lead toward the objective of life coping stress rather than unconditional sacrifice or endurance under crisis situation of domestic violences. It influence positively upon; helping individual growth, depending family breakdown, building healthy society. Therefore, it is suggested that a kind of program for enhancing self-confidence in order to develop the objective of life, communication efficiency, and optimistic orientation.
