The paper begins with the suspicion that the current studies do not appreciate properly the universality of Platonic political philosophy due to their inclination toward historicism. The paper argues that non-historicist approach to Platonic political philosophy is necessary for the current studies to overcome the limit of the historical approach to Platonic political philosophy. The paper suggests that Platonic dialogues should be read in a new way, which focuses more on the form than on the contents. Section 2 expounds that the existing studies on Platonic political philosophy are heavily influenced by developmental interpretations, which have much to do with the domination of the historical approach to Platonic political philosophy. Section 3 suggests that a new reading of Platonic dialogues requires to draw due attention to the dramatic elements of the dialogues, including characters, dramatic date and background, characters’ transformation, and narrating methods. Finally, section 4 rethinks the universality of Platonic political philosophy and appreciates the significance non-historicist approach to Platonic political philosophy.
