리금철의 과학환상소설에 관한 고찰 : 『아동문학』에 수록된 작품들을 중심으로 = A Study on Geum-chul Lee’s Science Fiction -Focusing on 『Children’s Literature』 Magazine of North Korea

At present, North Korea is on “Military-First Period”. North Korea promotes the “Military-First Politics”, called “Songun Politics”, as its national management system. “Building a strong and big country” has been North Korea’s core slogan used on its people over the past decades along with its “Military-First Politics”. The core logic of “Building a strong and big country” was creating a science and technology.
Since the introduction of “Military-First Period”, children’s literature of North Korea has emphasised on science fiction. Geum-chul Lee is North Korea’s representative children’s science fiction writer today. Since the 1990s, Geum-chul Lee has published many science fiction stories in 『hildren’s Literature』Magazine of North Korea, and his works are clearly outstanding among those published in the magazine. He created a variety of exciting shapes and incorporated a variety of exciting materials in his writings.
This article reviews Geum-chul Lee’s science fiction stories and provides comprehensive analysis of characteristics, and also ruptures, found in his works. Observing his writings, we can see that a series of exciting events take place in the space, and various types of robots appear in them. These traits are enough to satisfy children readers of North Korea. In addition, Geum-chul Lee’s science fiction stories are enough to stimulate interests from children readers of South Korea who are confined to the routine of school and home.
It is true that Geum-chul Lee’s science fiction stories contain a variety of factors that children readers may enjoy. However, they also have many fatal problems as child characters decide to sacrifice themselves for the development of science and technology.)
In Geum-chul Lee’s science fiction stories, respect for the rights of children does not exist. In his works, child characters are just committed to the cause of “Building a strong and big country” and the development of science and technology.
