The purpose of this study is to find out choreographies appropriate for the digital era, and to expand the existing limits of choreography through the analysis of digital media utilizing dance works.
Digital media is already actively practiced in creative works of dance. The creating condition is continuously developing and is entering into a new phase. Properly fusing digital media with dance work and studying choreographies in various perspectives, which promote qualitative improvements, are necessary in such condition.
Before analyzing the art work, the study has prospected aspects of contemporary art and current trends of digital media by looking into how the changes in media paradigm affect the society and how the society at large accepts the art. Also the researcher has realized that it is necessary to interpret how the media changes the perception of art and also how this further affects the whole concept, by discussing them in a prospect of esthetics.
This study has used qualities of digital media as concepts to analyze dance works in a new perspective, also by relating them with digital forms of art. In order to grasp the trends of digital dance the researcher has set changes and distortion of movements, imaginary space and diversification of construction, group work through networks, easy participation of audience and variations in meanings of dance as a focus of the discussion by looking into changes of dance works over digital media era.
By looking into following art performances「Brownian Motion」(1997), 「Ghostcatching」(1999),「AfterGhostcatching」(2010),「Zone」(2001),「16[R]evolution」(2006), the researcher was also able to find out how, Tecnical method, Virtuality, Interaction are signified and choreographed in each performances. These three qualities have been revealed distinctively according to their different depicting approaches and this resulted as disparate choreographies.
However, similarities were also found. They are deviation from body causing diversification of images and movements and multivocal directing, virtual space enabling complex and multidimensional changes in time-space, and interactions resulting broadening of synaesthetic perception and forming new relations with the audience.
Explanations about different ways of choreography, broadened by the application of four kinds of digital media are following:
Firstly, since choreographies on web pages can set different approaches according to the menu presented on the dance work, reconstructing and expanding moves and gestures fragmentarily and limitlessly as the audience specified are possible. Also, in composing the time and space, deriving unlimited and multiple special layer, and constructing time are able due to versatile interactions with the audience and choreography modifying. The game-formed composition suggests new choreographies which enhance the interactions with the audience.
Secondly, as the data motion-captured from the choreographies through motion capture system can be used in various ways, it can be copied and recreated by converting into new, diverse characters, and transformed into various forms of performance, such as stage performance, movie clips, and online performances. More motions are expressed beyond the existing notions of movements. Also, the time and space can be converted into three or four-dimensional space which, in result, attains the flexibility. Simulation before the performance is able, and application to other fields has become easier.
Thirdly, choreographies have become able to perform at a precise location, pace, and towards the exact direction due to the motion realization of robot technology. This has made it possible to overcome the limits of human physical power and motion. Also, as a stage set, it creates various effects and characters.
Lastly, according to the broadened concept of choreography through the interacting system, the choreographer has become able to interact with the technology in multiple ways through digital media, and this further enabled the stage composition in new forms. This fundamental difference from existing choreographies has brought changes in the roles of choreographer, dancer, music, light, and video clip and it also combines the audience participation.
As a result, the suggestion of new choreographies in digital era diversifies and modifies the images and movements through technology operation. Also, it promotes dance performances as imaginary art work, by overcoming the limits of time and space. Taking choreographies, which are aware of the interactions between the technology environment and the audience, such as web, 3D motion capture, robot, interaction system and etc, is possible. In addition, it also popularizes the dance art by combining it with digital media.
This study focuses on the changes of choreography caused by effective application of digital media, and suggests new technological approach and more diverse choreography in the creation of dance by setting dance as a significant part in digital era.
