It has become serious problem in the acute hematogenous osteomyelitis in children that diagnosis and treatment are delayed.
24 cases of acute pyogenic osteomyelitis in children were studied who were admited in the Dept. of Orthopedic Surgery, Chungnam University Hospital for 3. 6 years from Jan. 1976 to jun. 1979.
Following results were obtained :
1. Sex ratio was 2.4 : 1. Age distribution showed the gooup between 6 and 10 yrs old was 11 cases (45.8%).
2. Most frequent sites of involvement were distal femur and proximal tibia(45.8%).
3. Duration of disease showed the group between 3 and 7 days was 8 cas cases(33.3%) and 7-14 days was 6(25%).
4. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate was definitely increased in 20 cases (83.3%) and most reliable criteria for stopping antibiotics.
5. The most frequent causative organism was coagulase (+) staphylococcus(70%) and result of negative culture has deeep relation to antibiotics administration before culture.
6. Early diagnosis and early operation seem to be the best method of treatment in acute hematogenous osteomyelitis in children.
